The Fox in the Forest is one of my new favorite two-player games, and it’s a game I look forward to. It’s beautiful, mechanically excellent, and always fun to play. The Fox in the Forest is the complete package. No two games of Dwarf Mine are the same, and you can keep records of your successes – and failures – as you play. The Fox in the Forest resembles a classic trick-taking game, but it was designed for just two players. Really, it just comes down to how often you look for quick, deep 2-player. On the mine sheet, you’ll see a significant amount of space to record the history of your mine. The Fox in the Forest is a very inexpensive game that can get you a lot of mileage. Just as your rooms are unique, the history of the mine is too. What will your first hovel be called? Your first barracks? Is your great hall just a great hall, or is it the Throat of the Slumbering Bear? As you build your mine, you will be naming the rooms of your mine. The top card of the draw deck is turned face up and establishes the trump suit. Each player is dealt a hand of 13 cards and the remaining cards are set aside to make the draw deck. Everything is in your control, but nothing is truly knowable, and this kittenish struggle perfectly fits the intrinsic coyness of holding and playing cards. The deck of cards consists of 3 different suits with values ranging from 1 to 11. Every decision in Fox in the Forest is as sweet and chewy as so much fudge. If a player takes too many tricks, they are determined to be greedy and wont get any points at all. This is a two-player trick-taking game that overcomes all of the limitations in regards to why trick-taking games are terrible with two players. The thing that makes The Fox in the Forest Duet really unique is the cooperative tug-of-war/two-person saw thing you’re doing on the board. The Fox in the Forest has a unique take on scoring that introduces tension into the trick-taking formula. These changes to the mountain make each game different, and designing each mine a challenge. Or, natural caves may block prime mining locations for your mountain. You’ll also notice that different events can impact the mountain.įor example, a rock worm might carved out a layer of rock that is unstable and dangerous to mine in, even for dwarves. Where the rooms are located, which rooms to choose, and how deep to dig – these are all decisions you make while playing. There are a few things to point out about Dwarf Mine.
